Eh, not too keen on it. It's kinda confusing imo what is the significance of bumping into the other girls and coming out with long hair for a brief second?

Madoka was also shown with long hair in her transformation. Mami was shown with her hair down. Maybe this is relevant?

Yep, nearly all of them have German names. Not that it really matters whether the name is German, French, English, etc. A witch can be named anything.

It is a question, who invents these names (I mean in-universe) and who is supposed to read runes (when I have heard somehow none of the characters can read them)?

It's even weirder why they're named as Kyubey has referred to witchified magical girls by their original name, so he can't read the runes either (or doesn't care to).

It'd make a great story idea of magical girls trying to find meaning with the runes in a witch's barrier. I know someone who had a magical girl exploring this concept and was planning to make a comic on it.

Dunno where the names are coming from. If it's the witch's choice (which is probable) it must be some unwitting choice. The witch and her barrier is a whole big subconscious and her familiars are projections. (Yes, I just re-watched Inception and I'm a bit angry as I discovered that they've already done something I want to do in Tomb Raider and the Angel Of Death. But I'll do it anyway as I have solid plans.)

Finding the runes' meaning? In my world it was Astrid Farnsworth who deciphered them from the girls' reports. She was pretty quick at that, like the fans who decoded the messages while the original series was still airing (probably well before the Mecca mission). By the time of Girls Of Science Era the translator is installed in the visor of the helmet that comes with the girls' standard combat uniform. Not that they really need it, they can fluently read the characters and have some German knowledge too.

The Incubators' writing system must be much more interesting. I think it's something like the mix of Gallifreyan circular writing and Korean Hangul, just as cryptic as the former and scientifically analytic as the latter. It just happens to build complex shapes of thought elements instead of voices or syllables as they have long left spoken language behind in favor of some abstract telepathy.

Isn't it easier to memorize the runes (they are very easy, actually) and learn German (runic writings are usually in German)?

Sure, it must be a way (the only way for most of them) to communicate, to express their thoughts and feelings. Many runes in Madoka Magica don't make much sense but they may mean something to the witch who is the insane core of a former magical girl. Rebellion is an exceptionally good example, it's full of cryptic and creepy messages along the way to the realization and the final birth of Homulilly.

And the veterans of Walpurgisnacht don't really need the subtitles for the runes but imagine what happens when a rookie joins to UN/VP and sent into a labyrinth on a mission to find survivors and, if possible, eliminate (mercy kill) the witch. These messages may be disturbing but may as well be helpful for someone who seeks to euthanize the labyrinth's master. It's good to know what the messages say. They may even warn you about some danger.

Yes, as these runes make a simple alphabet consisting of a few dozen characters they're pretty easy to memorize. But to learn a complete language is a much bigger task and they're usually eager to go on missions. I'm far from "done" with learning English after 30 years. Who knows how complex expressions the witches may use? The more poetic ones may surpass Goethe himself. Plus they have to master their remaining abilities after losing their magic.

Sometimes they may even mix other languages in these messages. Homulilly sent Japanese and English messages too but I don't want to overestimate the translator's capacity. (My girls at the age of 20 are usually pretty good at English, could survive in Germany and Kyouko can speak some Arab too.) Their "smart helmet" is mostly for in-labyrinth navigation and image filtering to spot magical constructs and illusion traps.

And the runes being always the same (only the font differs sometimes) and appearing both in witchs' labyrinths and on magical girls' soul gem rings means the alphabet may be something that is present in humankind's collective subconsciousness from ancient times? Like, every human has the knowledge of runes imprinted deep in their mind but is normally unable to evoke this knowledge...When a girl becomes a magical girl, some of this ancient knowledge is released when a soul gem is created...and then when she becomes a witch, the subconsciousness is pulled off from the depths and so is the knowledge of the runes...

This is the only explanation, I think.

Probably. Though they definitely don't consciously know the runes. This is where very down-to-earth deciphering comes in.

On the Doppels: I'd like to see Homura's too. Homulilly is a very disturbing witch. I wonder what kind of doppel they make of her.

Even though I've already said I don't really like the concept of Doppels. Sayaka has one after Rebellion, it's fine. But the whole Magia Record has to take place in that world if we want them work. Also, what about Madoka's doppel? How did she become a magical girl after being drawn back down to Earth...?

The beginning of Rebellion also seemed inconsistient with the tv series but later it turned out it was logical after all. To some extent...Maybe they will provide a sensible explanation for all these doppells and rumors...
